WINTERIZING REMINDERS AND TIPS FOR RESIDENTS
GERING – Temperatures are expected to drop considerably overnight. City of Gering officials would like to remind residents to be mindful about winterizing sprinkler systems and backflow preventers, and disconnecting garden hoses to help prevent damage and costly repairs.
To save money and improve heating efficiency, it’s recommended that home owners install weatherstripping around doors and windows, and apply caulk to stationary gaps around frames. It’s also a good time to have furnaces inspected and replace air filters.
Additionally, City officials urge residents to be aware of forecasted freezing temperatures this winter, especially when planning to travel out of town. Leave kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open to allow indoor air to circulate around plumbing. Also, leave a slow drip of cold water from a faucet to keep water moving and prevent pipes from freezing when temperatures are below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Choose the faucet located the farthest away from the main water shut-off valve to help draw water all the way through the plumbing system. It’s also recommended to insulate pipes that are vulnerable such as in unheated areas inside and outside the home.
Finally, with the end of Daylight Savings Time on November 1, change batteries in smoke detectors. Working smoke alarms save lives.
Thank you.
