                                                                                  DISCOLORED WATER IN AREAS OF GERING

GERING – Due to a water main break, there is currently discolored water throughout the  City of Gering’s water system.  Citizens may see a brown/gray discoloration in a glass of  water, bathroom sinks, and/or toilets.  The discoloration is caused by Manganese.  If  anyone sees discoloration in water, run a garden hose or a sprinkler to help clear the discoloration out.  If there’ s an excessive amount of discoloration, call the City of Gering at (308) 436-6800 and staff will attempt to flush a nearby hydrant to clear out the discoloration.  City personnel will be flushing hydrants throughout Gering into the evening to remove the discolored water.  Residents can expect the water color to be back to normal in the next day or two. 

Manganese is a naturally occurring mineral in soil and water.  There are no federal or state regulations regulating manganese in public water supply systems.  City officials will provide more information as it becomes available.
