Dive into fun for the whole family June 1st! Legion Park will be scattered with fun things to do. The Riverside Discovery Center will have critters you can check out, and The Bird Conservancy of the Rockies will be there too. Explore chalk art, try your luck at a watergun target range and a fishing game. If that isn't enough, we have crafts for kids and teens and sign-up prizes too.

The Friends of the Gering Library have arranged for the Snowie Bus to provide treats for those who sign up for the reading program.

My Garden of a Thousand Bees (G) Family Event

Watch My Garden of a Thousand Bees in the Library Community Room. See bees like you’ve never seen them before! Gering Public Library will be showing the PBS Nature documentary, My Garden of a Thousand Bees. Popcorn, water and honey sticks will be provided. Feel free to bring other snacks for your family. The Incredible Journey with the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies

Where will the water you drink today be tomorrow? Join us for an "Incredible Journey" through the water cycle. With a roll of the die, you will follow the paths of water droplets as they move within the water cycle. On your journey, pick up colorful beads as you travel from a river, to the ocean, to the clouds, and so on. Then take home your water cycle journey as a keychain or bracelet! “The Incredible Journey” activity is a great way for kids to connect their homes in the Nebraska Panhandle to the vast oceans hundreds of miles away."

Explore The Wonderful World of Waves with the Edgerton Explorit Center

Sound moves as vibrations and waves no matter where we are, on land or under water. Explore different types of sounds and how they reach our ears. Watch dramatic demonstrations of how you can not only hear, but actually see sound waves. After the presentation you can learn about waves with three hands-on labs.

     Pollinators are the Bee’s Knees! Walk from the pool to the Ever Green House, 1210 D Street in Gering. This family-friendly event will keep everyone “a-buzz” with activities including a beekeeper with bees,  storytime, a balloon artist, crafts for adults and children as well as a gi-normous bear selfie station. Make an origami flower pot and plant a sunflower to take home then take a spin on UNL Extension’s blender bike to make a healthy snack. The Ever Green House will also have some new bee-utiful sculptures to enjoy.

Learn about how wild bees and other pollinators play a crucial role in nature. They pollinate fruits, veggies, grains, and flowers. All of these are essential to agriculture and wild ecosystems.  Pollinator feeding and nesting habitat is declining. They're also threatened by pesticides.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be held, Sunday, June 26 from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

     We'll be kicking the teen summer reading program off with a Jeopardy-inspired quiz night about ocean animals. For each correct answer teens get a small prize. First place prize is a blue ocean wonder globe and second place will go home with an ocean sun-catcher craft kit.

     Dive in and explore a coral reef maze with Cue-bots (mini-robots) then decorate a stone using hydro-dipping techniques.

Puzzle Room Challenge (T)

     Captain Biblios, the pirate, has hidden his treasure somewhere in the library. Once you locate the lockbox containing the captain's treasure, you will have to solve puzzles throughout the library to discover the codes to five different locks. Will you be able to uncover the treasure before it's too late?

Geocaching

     Geocaching is like a modern-day treasure hunt. The Larson Family will explain the basics of geocaching and talk about their experiences. Then we will see if we can use our new knowledge to locate some caches near the library.

Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency
June 22 at 5:30 p.m. in the Library Community Room
     Everybody's talking about Bitcoin and cryptocurrency- but what is it? Join us for a discussion about cryptocurrency and for an opportunity to ask all the questions you have had but were afraid to ask.  "I  tried to avoid cryptocurrency but so many people would ask me about it, and since I did not have many answers, I decided to do some research so that I could be more help " said Sam Bradley. Come learn the basics about cryptocurrency, how it is being used and some of the possibilities for its use in the future.

Food For Thought Book Discussion, "Salt: A World History" by Mark Kurlansky

A substance so valuable it served as currency, salt has influenced the establishment of trade routes and cities, provoked and financed wars, secured empires, and inspired revolutions.

Civic Engagement 
June 29 6:00 p.m. at the Library Community Room
     How does Nebraska do compared to other states in volunteering, voting, and getting together with neighbors? How are young Nebraskans getting involved differently than older generations? Most importantly, in a time when people are as busy (and distracted) as ever, how can we involve all residents in building up our town for the future? Come join this lively and important discussion! Led by Daniel Bennett of Civic Nebraska, this session will start by looking at the latest data on these trends in Nebraska and discuss what they mean for Gering. We'll finish by discussing how we can use our heads, hands, and hearts to sustain a thriving culture of involvement into the future.
