Come to the Tails and Tales Summer Reading Signup Event June 2 at Legion Park from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. 

Gering Library has lots of fin-tastic programs planned for this year’s summer reading program. Join us for Tails and Tales activities throughout the month of June, starting with our sign up event at Legion Park on June 2 from 1:00-3:00 p.m.

We have tail-wagging fun for the whole family planned on June 2nd, including a furry friends meet and greet with the Panhandle Humane Society, as well as activity stations with The Riverside Discovery Center, Skipper's Cupboard, Little IT House, and The Bird Conservancy of the Rockies. Rick Henderson will be providing horse-drawn hay rack rides around the block, and if that isn't enough, we have crafts for kids and teens and sign-up prizes too.

The Friends of the Gering Library have arranged for the Snowie Bus to provide treats for those who sign up for the reading program.

Get your tail over to the Gering Library this summer and join the Tails and Tales summer reading program, we have something for everybody.

Nature Tails! with Amanda Filipi from the Wildcat Hills Nature Center
June 9 at 1:30 p.m. in Legion Park
     Come along and discover wild and amazing creatures! Learn about their interesting adaptations, places they live and other fun facts! You will also have the chance to meet some live animal friends.

Backyard Habitats-SURVIVOR: Backyard Edition with Park Ranger Eric Grunwald from the Scotts Bluff National Monument
June 12 at 10:30 a.m. in Legion Park
     It might not be Yellowstone National Park, but your backyard is the perfect habitat for animals that have adapted to living in habitats that have been changed by people. Learn more about what animals need for a good habitat and ways that they have adapted in SURVIVOR: Backyard Edition, presented by Ranger Grunwald. Next, families will make three backyard habitats to take home: Bird Feeder, Butterfly Puddler, Bug Hotel!

Movie @ the Midwest: The Secret Life of Pets
June 14 at 2:00 p.m.
     The quiet life of a terrier named Max is upended when his owner takes in Duke, a stray whom Max instantly dislikes. Rated PG. Free to the public. Concessions available from the Midwest Theater.

Theatre West presents: You’re Awesome Possum!
June 16 at 1:30 p.m. in Legion Park
     An upbeat musical with an uplifting message for everyone—you don’t need to be a superstar to be valuable. Being kind and helpful are wonderful ways to be—just being you is unique and just awesome! Join the library staff for a craft following the performance.

Land of Ladybugs & The Big Year: Movie with Lemon Love
June 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gering Civic Plaza
     Join us for a special family program and multi-age storytime w/craft on ladybugs followed by a live ladybug release. Purchase yummy refreshments from the Lemon Love truck and settle down to watch The Big Year, rated PG, in Gering’s lovely new Civic Plaza. Movie and free popcorn provided by The Midwest Theater. Bring your own chair/blanket and the movie will start at dusk. Lemon Love will be at the Plaza at 7:00 until the movie begins. This program is sponsored by the Wildcat Audubon Society and the Friends of the Gering Library.

Tails & Tales @ The Riverside Discovery Center
June 23 at 1:00 p.m.
     Free admission for the whole family to the Riverside Discovery Center from 1:00 to 1:30. Attend a program about Animal Tails on the stage at 1:30 followed by a spider monkey painting demo (They paint with their tails!). Next, explore the zoo and enjoy the Splash Pad for as long as you’d like. Two family memberships to the zoo have been generously donated by the Riverside Discovery Center. A raffle ticket will be given to each person upon entry to the zoo between 1:00 and 1:30. Winners will be announced after the Tails & Tales program on the stage.

     The whole family is invited for two hours of free swimming!

The Amazing Arthur: Summer Reading Ending Party
June 30 at 1:30 p.m. in the Gering Civic Plaza

Needle Felting Animal Sculptures (T)
with Brittany Wells from Brown Sheep Company
June 7 from 2-4 p.m. in the Gering Library Community Room
     Learn the fiber art of needle felting and make a small “woolpet”. In a nutshell, needle felting is the process of transforming wool into 3D objects using a barbed needle.

Interactive Movie Night: Finding Nemo (T)
June 14 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Gering Library Community Room
     You might have seen the movie Finding Nemo but you’ve never experienced it like this. Everyone gets an interactive script and a bag filled with props and snacks. Then play along with the movie in a new twist on the fun classic. For example, when they make Pearl squirt in the movie then take out your Gushers from your prop bag and eat them! Also, enjoy Finding Nemo themed refreshments and Animal Jeopardy!

Gering Rocks! Rock Painting with Little IT House (T)
June 21 from 1:30-3:00 p.m. in the Gering Library Community Room
     If you know anything about Gering, Nebraska, you already know that Gering “Rocks!”  So join Megan Kaminski and express yourself by painting rocks that can be placed around the city.
     Each participant will decorate a rock in a way that expresses your specific style. And you can even add a message to your rock that you would like to share with the unexpecting community!  Tell someone you love them, spread a specific message that is important to you or simply put some googly eyes on your rock.  There is no wrong way to express yourself here. After decorating your rock, we encourage you to place the rock within the community (But not on grassy areas, we don’t want lawnmowers to hit them) for people to find this summer. We will provide all the paint and other materials needed.  All you need to do is bring your creativity, message, cause, imagination...

Teen Book Discussion: Louis Undercover by Fanny Britt & Isabelle Arsenault
June 25 at 1:30 p.m. in Legion Park (to be held at the library in case of bad weather)
     Join Public Services Librarian, Sherry Preston, and Library Asst., Lexi Tallmon, for a lively discussion of this wonderfully illustrated graphic novel. In this powerful story we meet Louis, a young boy who shuttles between his alcoholic dad and his worried mom. With the help of his best friend, Louis tries to summon up the courage to speak to his true love, Billie. Fresh air, sunshine, friends, fun discussion, & snacks!

Vegan Food Cooking-101 with Little IT House (T)
June 28 from 3-5 p.m. in the Gering Library Community Room   
     Vegan cooking is one of the biggest trends in today's world!  From “Meatless Mondays” to our favorite restaurants now offering vegan menu items, it is clear that veganism is here to stay! Stephen Kaminski has lived a vegan lifestyle for over 7 years and is excited to invite you to an intro to Vegan cooking event. He will be teaching how to cook Seitan, a meat substitute from Asia that dates back to almost 1,500 years ago. During this event, you will get “hands on” as you learn to make this amazing vegan food.  We will have a lot of fun along the way and answer any questions about veganism that you may have. Bring your curiosity and your appetite and we will have a fantastic time!

Porch Swing Birdfeeder
June 8 at 6:00 p.m. at Legion Park
     Build a cute porch swing birdfeeder. Call 436-7433 or stop by the library to pre-register so we can make sure to have enough for everybody!

Raptor Consevation Alliance
June 17 at 7:00 p.m. at City Council Chambers
     What do you do if you see an injured raptor? Learn how Raptor Conservation Alliance rescues and rehabilitates injured and sick eagles, hawks, owls, falcons and other raptors. Bird-themed snacks provided.

The Big Year (PG) starring Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black as obsessed birders.
June 21 at dusk (9:00) at the Civic Plaza. Come at 7:30 for a storytime, and a ladybug release in the Civic Plaza. Bring a blanket or lawn chair to enjoy this funny movie. The Lemon Love food truck will be at the plaza with sweet treats for purchase before the movie.

One Book One Nebraska Book Discussion, "Prairie Forge: The Extraordinary Story of the Nebraska Scrap Metal Drive of World War II" by James Kimble 
June 24 at 1:30 in the Library Community Room
     Kimble describes Nebraska’s effort to collect and recycle scrap metal for war munitions in 1942. The United States needed scrap iron to make everything from ships to bullets. Omaha World Herald Editor, Henry Doorley implemented a three week state-wide campaign that united Nebraskans in friendly competition with each other. Doorley’s campaign jump-started the rest of the United States to support the war effort through scrap iron drives as well.  
     Kimble’s book was chosen as the One Book One Nebraska selection this year.

Online Escape Room- Solve a mystery at the Riverside Discovery Center
     Riverside Discovery Center Mayor Kit, the arctic fox, is missing. Click on the picture to the right to tour the zoo, collect clues from the animals and see if you can find Kit! This is a family friendly activity.
